Devices of desire: Seven devices from Samsung, Apple, Nokia and others coming in 2017

The Apple iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy S8, and the Nokia P1 - just three of the new devices coming this year

Another year, another set of devices from Apple, Samsung, Nokia and others that are slightly slimmer, faster and maybe better looking than last year's. Computing has rounded up some of the more exciting devices that we can expect to see launched in 2017.

There have already been a number of rumours and pre-announcements about new devices coming next year, so here is a brief round-up of what we can expect.

First, Nokia has confirmed that it'll be making its long-awaited return to the market. There are also rumours that Microsoft will be debuting the Surface Phone, and Samsung's Galaxy Note range looks set to make a comeback. And there's more.

1. iPhone 8

With the next year's iPhone marking the 10th anniversary of Apple's smartphone series, speculation is rife that the firm has something big in store.

If rumours are to be believed, Apple will skip the iPhone 7S in favour of the iPhone 8, which analysts claim will be the most radical design yet with its 'all-glass' design and OLED screen.

There's talk that the iPhone 8 will be the first to support wireless charging and a Touch ID sensor embedded in its display, while an all-new "Pro" model is rumoured to pack to feature an S7 Edge-style curved display and dual camera setup.

Apple's iPhone 8 (if that's what it turns out to be called) is expected to ship in September 2017.

2. Surface Phone

Just possibly, 2017 will be the year that Microsoft's elusive Surface Phone finally debuts as the firm looks to increase its tiny share of the smartphone market.

If speculation is to be believed, the Windows 10-powered Surface Phone will be available in three versions; 4GB/128GB, 6GB/256GB and 8GB/512GB. All three devices are expected to pack USB-C ports, built-in fingerprint scanners and 5.7in AMOLED panels, while power is expected to be provided by Qualcomm.

This means, if legit, that the Surface Phone will be able to run fully-fledged Windows 10 desktop apps.

If indeed it arrives at all, the Surface Phone is expected early in 2017, but don't wait up for it.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Given the explosive bungling surrounding this year's now-defunct Galaxy Note 7, one thing's for sure about next year's release: it almost certainly won't spontaneously combust.

Beyond that, the Galaxy Note 8 (if indeed that's what it's called) is keeping its secrets close, although we can expect it to come with support for Samsung's S Pen stylus, a built-in iris scanner and a 5.7in display, possibly with 4K resolution. Rumours also point to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and support for Google's Daydream VR platform.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 likely will hit the shops in August 2017.

4. OnePlus 4

The OnePlus 4 (which may be renamed OnePlus 5 due to the fact that the number four is regarded as unlucky in China) will be the firm's most advanced smartphone yet.

Details are scarce, but rumours have emerged that it will feature a high-end metal casing, a Snapdragon 835 processor and a 5.5in QHD display, improving on the Full HD screen seen on the OnePlus 3T. There's also talk of a whopping 8GB RAM, a 21MP or 23MP rear-facing camera, a 4,000mAh battery and Android 7.0 Nougat.

The OnePlus 4 is expected to emerge in May or June next year.

5. Huawei P10

With this year's Huawei P9 selling more than nine million units, it's no surprise that the firm is already planning a follow up.

If rumours are to be believed, the new phone (let's call it the Huawei P10) will be the first to feature an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, which will be faster and more accurate than current capacitive sensors. Leaked specs also point to a 5.5in QHD display with a Samsung-style curved variant, Leica dual-lens rear cameras, Huawei's own Kirin 960 chip and either 4GB or 6GB RAM.

The 'Huawei P10' is expected to see an unveiling in April 2017.

6. Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung has confirmed that it's on the way, and leaks have revealed a little about what we can expect from the Galaxy S8.

Following in the footsteps of Apple's iPhone, the Galaxy S8 will be the first smartphone to come with Samsung's own artificial intelligence (AI) assistant built in. The similarities don't stop there, with rumours that the Galaxy S8 will also dump the headphone jack, in favour of audio over USB-C.

A 2K-resolution AMOLED Edge display is on the way, along with baked-in IP68 certification, fingerprint and iris scanners, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 power and a dual rear-facing camera setup.

The Galaxy S8 likely will debut at Mobile World Congress in February.

7. Nokia P1

Yes, Nokia has confirmed that 2017 will see it return to the smartphone market like a phoenix from the flames, this time though it's plumping for Android-powered handsets.

The Nokia P1 is tipped to be the firm's first high-end Android device, and will reportedly offer IP68 water and dust resistance and be available in two sizes, 5.2in and 5.5in, each with QHD 2560x1440 AMOLED displays.

With Android 7.0 on board, the Nokia P1 also looks set to arrive with support for Google's Daydream VR platform.

Nokia's P1 will launch in the first quarter of 2017.
