Compaq replaces Dell at Pickfords

Removals firm Pickfords is the latest company to have been dragged into the war of words between Compaq and Dell.

Compaq has ousted Dell as the server supplier to regional branches of Pickfords in a #200,000 deal. It will supply ProLiant 800 servers which will be rolled out to each of Pickfords' 70 depots over the next three months.

Mike Chipperfield, IT services manager at Pickfords, said: 'These systems will substantially improve communication and coordination with our branch network, providing more management information and enabling us to extend IT information down to a site-by-site basis.

'The Compaq servers were chosen because of their reliability as well as their competitive price.'

The servers will be used to run the branch administration system, which handles storage and removals management, enquiries and invoicing. They will run Windows NT 4.0 with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 client PCs.

Steve Lewis, server product manager at Dell, said: 'I'm quite impressed Compaq is making a noise about winning against Dell. There are plenty of companies choosing Dell over Compaq. Compaq's entry level servers are fairly restricted in disk capacity.'
