Seagate extends drive capacities
First 1.5TB desktop drives coming in August
Hard drive maker Seagate is set to launch its first 1.5 terabyte system for corporate desktops, along with a half-terabyte drive for notebooks.
The Barracuda 7200.11 uses so-called perpendicular magnetic recording technology to deliver the largest desktop hard drive that Seagate has yet built.
“Organisations continue to create, share and consume digital content at levels never before seen, giving rise to new markets, new applications and demand for desktop and notebook computers with unprecedented storage capacity, performance and reliability,” said Michael Wingert, executive vice president at Seagate.
Seagate is also set to release two new 2.5in notebook hard drives – the Momentus 5400.6 and the Momentus 7200.4. Both have capacities up to 500GB, and include a Serial ATA 3Gb/s interface, shock protection and a free-fall sensor.
The latest Barracuda drives are expected to begin shipping in August, while the Momentus drives are pencilled to ship before the end of 2008.
