Ofcom announces new auction for radio spectrum licences

Ofcom is set to auction new licenses for high-capacity broadband

Ofcom is to auction radio spectrum licences that can be used for high-capacity broadband.

The spectrum bands to be auctioned are between 10 GHz and 40 GHz, and will be able to carry large amounts of data over distances of up to 12 kilometres.

As well as being used for broadband services, the high frequency spectrum could be used for organizations wanting to share wireless Internet connections in adjacent buildings.

Ofcom said that the decision to auction the spectrum would provide consumers with access to new services, greater choice and competition.

A provisional deadline of January 16 2008 has been set for applications to take part in the auction, which will be held online.

Ofcom said that it will not set any conditions on the types of technology or service used in conjunction with the spectrum. All licences granted will be tradable.

This is the fourth auction of radio spectrum licences to be carried out by Ofcom.
