Apptivity's Java tool speeds development

Californian start-up company Apptivity, established by a group of ex-Informix veterans, plans to ship one of the first tools for building Java-based database applications in March.

Aiming to speed up programming developments, Apptivity Developer creates both client and server sections of a standalone or browser-based application - in the same environment and at the same time.

Positioned as a rapid application development tool, it comes with source code, a project manager listing application components and objects, a visual query editor, a session manager to handle database connections, and a load balancing option.

It costs $1,995 (#1,209) for a single-user development licence plus a run-time licence for two concurrent users.

The run-time environment, called Apptivity Server, costs $2,500 for 10 additional concurrent users.

Borland has started shipping Intrabuilder Client-Server for developers wanting to create intranet applications that run on relational databases.

A 30-day trial version of the product can be downloaded from the Web at: www.borland.com. The full-blown offering costs #1,279.
