New storage benchmark on the way

An industry association has promised to develop criteria for benchmarking storage products which will lead to performance measurements similar to the TPC benchmarks for hardware, writes Jonathan Lambeth.

Companies backing the the Storage Performance Council (SPC) include Data General, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Unisys and Western Digital.

The SPC, formed last year, said the standards will be established over the next 12 months.

Chris Atkins, storage marketing manager at Sun Microsystems UK said there are no third parties analysing storage performance because it is a complex process with many variables.

Atkins added, however, that the growth in demand for storage over the last three years has driven demand for reliable benchmarks.

?The more mist, smoke and rubbish there is flying around the marketplace, the easier it is for inadequate products backed by aggressive marketing to prosper,? he said.
