Intel confirms details and dates for next-generation chips

New server, desktop and laptop processors are imminent

Intel has announced a new motherboard chipset that will feature in its vPro corporate desktop platform, and confirmed launch dates for its next-generation server, desktop and mobile processors.

Speaking at the Computex technology show in Taiwan, Intel senior vice-president Anand Chandrasekher unveiled the Intel P965 Express chipset, formerly codenamed Broadwater.

Chandrasekher also confirmed that the new server, desktop and laptop processors based on Intel’s new Core micro-architecture will ship in June, July and August, respectively.

Vendors such as Dell have already unveiled systems based on the first of the new chips, the Xeon processor 5100 series.

The Core 2 Duo desktop chip, formerly codenamed Conroe, will form the basis of the vPro platform along with the new P965 Express chipset. The latter supports DDR2 memory up to 800MHz and Intel Fast Memory Access: a set of features that optimises memory performance.

The laptop version of the new chips is also called Core 2 Duo but was formerly known by the codename Merom.

Intel also announced a new ultra low voltage version of the current Intel Core Duo laptop chip that consumes less than one watt of power on average, according to the firm. This chip is intended for the lightest laptop designs and will ship in the summer.
