Good news for intranet screen saver
COMPANIES frustrated with screen-saver based news updates devouring network capacity may now have a bandwidth-friendly alternative, writes Simon Robinson.
Dutch company Netpresenter has launched version 3.0 of its newscaster screen saver, to compete directly with market leader Pointcast.
Aimed at corporate intra-nets, Netpresenter 3.0 takes up 220K of memory. The company says Pointcast?s screen saver takes up 7Mb and requires greater bandwidth.
?Pointcast is one of the most de-installed programs in corporate America because networks cannot cope with its bandwidth requirements,? said Frank Hoen, Netpresenter?s president and chief executive.
Hoen claims version 3.0 gives a company more control over the news it distributes across intranets.
The suite includes a client-based business editor, allowing organisations to choose the desired content. A pop-up facility relays urgent news.
