One Laptop per Child targets secondary schools

Not-for-profit organisation introduces laptop for older pupils

The XO laptop will have a facelift as well as a bigger keyboard for older students

The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Association has introduced a new revamped laptop aimed at disadvantaged secondary school children across the world.

The new laptops, known as the XO-HS, are based on the original XO laptop, which was built for primary school children. The new machines feature a larger keyboard and upgraded software, according to a report by the BBC.

The Uruguay government has ordered 90,000 of the new laptops. The country has already distributed nearly 400,000 XO laptops to primary schools.

"Uruguay is the only deployment that is complete," Kalil Nicolas of the OLPC Association told BBC News. "They have full saturation of their primary schools. "

"We are expanding our reach," said Nicolas. "We still want to focus on 6-12 year olds – and motivate them – but they need a laptop to grow into."

The non-profit organisation is now looking into developing tablet PCs, which it claims will cost as little as $75.
