Cabletron raises its DSL stock

Cabletron has bought two companies to bolster its digital subscriber line (DSL) strategy.

The move follows the technology's high-profile at the Supercomm '98 telecoms show in Atlanta. The exhibition heralded a future dominated by DSL remote links (see page 7).

With the pressure on for high-speed remote access equipment, Cabletron acquired FlowPoint Networks, a DSL client device vendor, and Ariel's DSL central-office concentrator division.

Cabletron will develop cable modems based on FlowPoint's Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) modems and its own cable modem technology. FlowPoint also makes ADSL, Symmetric DSL, ISDN DSL routers, as well as ISDN client devices.
