Marconi torpedoes 10-year-old system

Marconi Electronics Systems Underwater Weapons Division has replaced a 10-year-old shared Ethernet network with an ATM and switched Ethernet network, to cut congestion and support high-bandwidth applications.

The new network at the Portsmouth-based manufacturing division - which makes underwater guided weapons and mines - supports office automation, engineering analysis and specialist CAD applications.

Integrator Chernikeeff oversaw the first two phases of the project, which involved building a 155Mbps/622Mbps ATM fabric, before migrating half of the users to switched Ethernet, and configuring a VLan.
