UPS delivers service with RAM

United Parcel Service (UPS) plans to increase its lead in the $8bn (#4.88bn) European express distribution market by using RAM Mobile Data technology to offer proof of delivery within minutes.

RAM will provide mobile data services in the UK, Netherlands and Belgium, so drivers carrying handheld data terminals can update UPS' mainframe-based package tracking system Total Track within minutes of delivery.

Total Track can then be accessed by customers via the Internet.

UPS is losing money in Europe - estimated at $1bn in the last 10 years - but has called the region 'crucial' to its future. Last month it set up five Web sites - in France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the UK.
