Personal data leaked in Gateshead Council cyberattack
Council says possibility further issues will arise
Gateshead Council says personal data has been leaked following a cybersecurity incident on 8th January 2025.
Investigations are underway by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) following the incident, in which the attackers accessed a number of files.
Mike Barker, Strategic Director for Corporate Services and Governance at Gateshead Council, said immediate action has been taken to limit data loss.
“Work is on-going with relevant parties to understand how this incident happened and any wider implications it may have,” he added.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and other regulatory bodies have been informed of the breach in compliance with statutory requirements under the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR.
The council is advising residents to watch for phishing emails or fraudulent activity. It is also advising the use of strong, unique passwords and exercising caution when sharing personal information.
Barker added: “As investigations continue, there is a possibility of further issues arising, and we will work to mitigate this should that be the case.
“Investigations so far have not indicated there is any further damage caused, but we need to be open to the possibility.
"Incidents of this nature, unfortunately, are on the rise - with many organisations like ours already having dealt with such situations.”
