Google chosen to host Will and Kate wedding web site

Accenture-built web site launched to promote Royal Wedding in April

The Royal Family has set up a web site to promote the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The site - http://www.officialroyalwedding2011.org - features photos of the couple, Twitter updates, video content and other news from the Royal Family.

Managed services firm Accenture built the site and web design agency Reading Room led the design and creative work.

The site developers chose to use Google's infrastructure to power the site. The web site is hosted on Google App Engine, which allows developers to easily build and host their web applications on Google's own computing infrastructure.

Google said that the app engine allows apps to run quickly, more securely, and at scale, making it ideal for such an important national occasion.

"The App Engine is a way for other organisations to run online services and applications hosted by Google, using our infrastructure," said a Google spokesperson.

"If you set up something that is hosted by us and it becomes popular overnight, you don't need to worry about upgrading your servers; Google can cope with the heavy load."

Google said that the Royal Family will also benefit from Google's expertise in security, which will prevent hackers being able to crack the web site.

The site will be regularly updated by St James's Palace in the run up to the wedding day.
