HSBC rolls out secure keys for internet banking

HSBC's one-time security code generator aims to allay online banking fears

HSBC is sending secure log in keys to all of its internet banking customers in an effort to improve security.

HSBC's credit-card-sized Secure Key generates a unique PIN each time a customer logs on to their online account.

Customers simply push the green button on the keypad to generate the code.

"It's a quick extra step to keep our customers' details secure and away from uninvited eyes," said Chris Pilling, head of customer security development at HSBC.

Attacks on internet banking have escalated in recent years. A study published by the US Department of Justice in late 2010 revealed that 4.4 million US citizens had reported the misuse or attempted misuse of their online bank accounts over the previous two years.

The security card, which resembles a calculator, will be given to new HSBC online banking customers from 23 March and rolled out to all existing customers over the coming months.
