AMD wraps up $334m SeaMicro acquisition

Chip maker completes deal in less than a month

AMD has confirmed that its acquisition of server specialist SeaMicro has been completed.

The company said that it had committed some $334m for the deal which will include $293m worth of cash.

AMD only revealed its agreement to buy Sea Micro on 1 March.

The deal gives AMD a presence in the low-power server market and will play a central role in its push for the cloud datacentre market.

Low-power services have become a popular method for handling cloud computing operations and web applications.

Large-scale web platforms such as Facebook and Google have long sought to transform their datacentres through the use of stripped-down, low-powered systems.

Recently ARM made its own push for the market by introducing a version of its low-powered processors designed for server use.

"Our unique fabric technology is truly one of the crown jewels of the cloud," said AMD global business units senior vice president and general manager, Lisa Su.

"The combination of this innovative technology with our processor design expertise greatly enhances our ability to attack the fastest growing portion of the server market with industry-leading low-power, low-cost, high-bandwidth solutions."

Following the closing of the deal, SeaMicro will assume the title of AMD Data Center Server Solutions.
