Future Nokia Lumia devices to feature waterproof technology
Company unveils Superhydrophopic technology
Nokia has unveiled new nano-technology capabilities that it will add to its next range of smartphones to make them water resistant.
The Finnish phone maker unveiled its new "Superhydrophopic" technology at its Lumia 610 unveiling in London on Thursday.
Nokia's vice president of north west Europe, Conor Pierce, claimed that the technology is one of many new innovations the company plans to bring to its smartphone range.
"What happens when a drop of water lands on a lotus leaf [...] has baffled scientists for generations [...] but our team in Cambridge found a solution," said Pierce.
"Nano technology lets us do it. Superhydrophobic technology makes water bounce, it stops it, rolls it off the device, that's the magic, that's what we're going to bring to the party."
Nokia representatives at the event refused to clarify how the technology works and gave no firm date when it will be implemented into the company's smartphones.
A number of Android competitors like Motorola already have similar technology in a number of their smartphones.
Motorola's Defy range and newly released Razr Maxx smartphones all claim to be "water resistant", boasting Kevlar based coatings.
