Raspberry Pi firm favourite with V3 readers

Miniature marvel preferred to flashy phones and laptops

The Raspberry Pi has garnered yet more recognition from consumers and the IT industry after V3 readers voted it their favourite device for the second quarter of 2012.

Asked to choose between the five top devices given an Editors' Choice Award by V3 during the quarter, the Raspberry Pi faced stiff competition from industry heavyweights such as the Apple Macbook Pro with Retina Display and the Samsung Galaxy S3.

However, the Pi was the clear favourite with our readers, who backed it with an overwhelming majority of 83 per cent of the votes, while open-source operating system Ubuntu 12.04 came in second with 11 per cent.

This left the more flashy gadgets scrapping for third, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 just making it with around three per cent of the votes, with the MacBook achieving two per cent and the HTC One X just one per cent.

Although these scores are low and could be seen as suggesting V3 readers are unimpressed with these devices, it appears more the case that the ethos behind Raspberry Pi, and the enthusiasm with which it has been taken up, made it the only real choice in the competition.

Availability for the device has rocketed in recent weeks after an initial backlog, with 4,000 units a day now being produced to help meet demand, while the device is to get a version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich in the future.
