Nokia touts Lumia 625 as UK's cheapest 4G smartphone

£200 device revealed ahead of Lumia 1020's release

Nokia has unveiled its latest affordable Windows Phone 8 handset, the Lumia 625, claiming it is the most affordable 4G phone available in the UK.

The 625 will cost just £200 and will be available from Vodafone, O2, EE, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u in Q3 this year.

Apart from 4G the Lumia 625 follows on from the legacy of the original 620 featuring the same interchangeable case design, but with slightly upgraded internal specifications. The device will run using the latest version of Windows Phone 8, featuring Nokia's Amber software and boasting a 4.7in WVGA 201ppi display, complete with Sunlight Readability Enhancement, High Brightness Mode, Color Enhancement and Super Sensitive Touch features.

Power-wise the Lumia 625 will feature a 1.2GHz, dual-core processor and slightly disappointing 512MB RAM. Camera-wise the Lumia 625 won't feature the custom lens and stabilisation technology as its more expensive siblings, instead featuring a more modest 5MP Autofocus rear and VGA front-facing cameras. The device will also only feature 8GB of in-built flash storage, but this can be upgraded using its microSD card slot.

Nokia Smart Devices executive vice president, Jo Harlow, said the company expects the 625's low price to prove a key selling point for British buyers.

"With our largest smartphone screen to date, the Nokia Lumia 625 is a perfect example of how Nokia is delivering leading smartphone innovation and experiences at every price point," she said.

The device unveiling comes just a week after Nokia unveiled its Lumia 1020 device with a whopping 41MP camera as it hopes to entice users to the Windows Phone operating system, which has so far failed to boost the firm's performance in the market.
