We check out HTC's new affordable Android smartphone

The HTC Desire 601 is the latest affordable handset from the Taiwanese phone maker. The phone takes a similar strategy to Nokia's recently launched Lumia 625 Windows Phone offering buyers an affordable big-screen smartphone with 4G connectivity.

Specs-wise the phone is a budget affair, featuring a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and qHD 4.5in display. HTC's chosen not to add its custom Ultrapixel camera technology to the phone, instead loading the Desire 601 with a basic 5MP rear and VGA front camera.

This could be forgiven if the Desire 601's price is as affordable as HTC claims. However, with HTC remaining tight-lipped about its exact cost the overall appeal of the phone is currently up in the air.
