Fujitsu selects Apigee APIs to aid cloud, big data and Internet of Things push
Tango Matsumoto, CTO and CIO at Fujitsu, says firm is 'transforming itself to align with historic change'
Global technology corporation Fujitsu, one of the largest IT suppliers in the world, has selected Apigee Edge to support its own internal IT transformation through the use of application programming interface (API) based shared data and services.
Fujitsu is headquartered in Japan and employs more than 162,000 people across the world. The deal with Apigee will see it using the supplied API management platform to underpin an initiative to move its internal IT infrastructure of 640 systems and 13,000 servers into the cloud within the next five years.
Fujitsu is currently in the middle of a Y200 billion (£1.15bn) push towards building the Fujitsu Cloud, a portfolio of services including platform-as-a-service (PaaS), infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), software-as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud integration services.
The deployment of Apigee is designed to increase efficiency and lower costs at the same time, while also gearing up Fujitsu for moves into the worlds of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT).
By deploying Apigee's intelligent API management platform internally, Fujitsu hopes to take lessons from its own upcoming internal transformation and use them to improve its own products and customer services.
"The world is rapidly moving to a state in which everything is digitalised and is connected to everything else via the cloud," said Tango Matsumoto, chief technology and chief information officer at Fujitsu, who described how Apigee is set to be an important part of the company "transforming itself to align with this historic change".
"Not only are they providing a platform for agile development of new applications, but Apigee also has the capabilities to support IoT devices and systems, as well as predictive analytics," he continued.
"Fujitsu relies on Apigee's strength in exposing data and backend system capabilities with modern APIs in a secure manner to developers. This will help enterprises to operate both Systems of Record (SoR) and Systems of Engagement (SoE) under rapidly changing business environments," Matsumoto concluded.
Chet Kapoor, CEO of Apigee, also welcomed the deal, the financial details of which haven't been disclosed.
"Fujitsu is one of the world's largest IT services providers. We're proud that such a company is putting its faith in Apigee to help shepherd its digital transformation, and we look forward to further collaboration and potential future opportunities with the company," he said.
