AMD dismisses reports of a break-up or spin-off
Firm remains committed to current business plan
Chipmaker AMD has denied suggestions that it is actively considering a break-up of its business.
A report on Reuters said that people who have chosen to remain anonymous confirmed that AMD is in the early stages of the plans and is considering its options.
The news agency cited three insiders who claim that AMD is looking to regroup and put the firm in a better position to compete with Intel.
The sources told Reuters that AMD has hired a consultancy firm to help it review all options. However, AMD denied the claims in a statement this weekend, explaining that it is sticking to its consistent plans regardless of reports to the contrary.
"AMD provided official confirmation that we have not hired an outside agency to explore spinning-off/splitting the company," said AMD spokesperson Sarah Youngbauer.
"We remain committed to the long-term strategy we laid out for the company in May at our Financial Analyst Day, which encompasses all parts of the business."
AMD is currently engaged in a transformation programme, and announced a reorganisation and a consolidation of business units into two groups in March 2014.
"During the past two years, we have been successfully executing our three-step strategy to reset, accelerate and ultimately transform AMD," said chief executive Rory Read at the time.
"[This] represents the next step in our long-term strategic plan to help ensure AMD's operating structure and culture are better aligned to drive consistent growth and profitability by leveraging our leadership IP to create differentiated products that help our customers win across a diversified set of high-growth markets."
AMD appointed a new chief executive last year in the shape of Dr Lisa Su, who had previously held the chief operating officer role.
"I am deeply honoured to have this opportunity to lead AMD during this important time of transformation," said Su at the time, when the talk was still of sustainable business and profitable growth.
"Our world-class technology assets combined with the incredible talent and passion of the AMD team provide us with a unique opportunity to shape the future of computing."
