V3 rounds up all the key stories coming from the tech trade show in Las Vegas

The first week back after Christmas and New Year can mean only one thing: CES. The giant trade show remains a staple of the tech calendar as a chance for firms of all sizes to unveil new products and discuss their plans for the year ahead.

The focus this year is on everything from AI and car technology to virtual reality headsets and, of course, new laptops, tablets and PCs.

With so much coming out of the show it can be hard to keep track of all the key announcements, so V3 has put together a round-up page of all the major stories that we'll update throughout the show, so check back regularly.

CES 2016: Dell unveils Latitude business devices inspired by XPS family

Dell unveiled several new devices at CES 2016 in its Latitude line of enterprise devices. The firm said that they represent a combination of design improvements lifted from the consumer-focused XPS series with the essential security and management features demanded by businesses.

CES 2016: Acer goes premium with Aspire Switch, TravelMate and Chromebook devices

Acer has unveiled new products at its CES 2016 conference, including the Aspire Switch 12 S 2-in-1 (above), a redesigned Chromebook 11 and the TravelMate P648, dubbed "the ultimate professional road warrior".

The Switch 12 S is perhaps the biggest surprise. The Acer Switch line is comprised largely of budget devices, but this is a premium 2-in-1 that includes a 4K/UHD, 12.5in IPS display, a rear-facing Intel RealSense 3D camera and a Thunderbolt 3-equipped USB-C port.

The new Chromebook 11, meanwhile, offers a more affordable option at €329, although this has been upgraded with a new "nano-imprinted" chassis that helps to lower its weight and thickness to 1.1kg and 18.6mm, down from 1.2kg and 18.7mm on the old Chromebook 11. It also has new Intel Celeron quad-core processors, up to 4GB of RAM and up to 32GB of eMMC storage.

Finally, the TravelMate P648 (below) is a business notebook aimed at mobile enterprise users. It combines Windows 10 Pro with a choice of Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 vPro processors and support for 802.11ad WiGig, a rare WiFi standard that operates over the new 60GHz band.

CES 2016: AMD unveils new Polaris GPU architecture coming later this year

AMD has unveiled a new GPU architecture based on 14nm FinFET technology that is set to drive new Radeon graphics products later this year and is likely to be integrated into future generations of its APU chips to power PC systems.

Dubbed Polaris by AMD, the latest GPU technology is the fourth iteration of the firm's Graphics Core Next architecture and is expected to deliver a range of improvements such as support for high dynamic range displays and increased performance at a much lower power consumption level.

AMD said it expects GPUs based on Polaris to ship sometime in the middle of 2016.

CES 2016: Lenovo details modular tablet and updated X1 Carbon in portfolio refresh

Lenovo has started 2016 with an expanded X1 systems portfolio, comprising a modular tablet that can be adapted through clip-on modules, an updated version of the acclaimed X1 Carbon ultrabook, the X1 Yoga convertible and a ThinkCentre X1 all-in-one desktop.

The ThinkPad X1 Tablet (above) offers customers the ability to add functionality through the use of optional modules that clip on to the bottom edge of the device.

These currently consist of a Presenter Module with built-in projector, a 3D Imaging Module with an Intel RealSense camera, and a Productivity Module that extends the maximum battery life from 10 to up to 15 hours.

CES 2016: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be adopted by Ford and Fiat Chrysler cars

Ford is expanding its Sync infotainment and connectivity systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The company revealed at CES 2016 in Las Vegas that it is giving its cars easy access to a software layer that allows smartphone apps from Apple and Google to be used with car entertainment and information units.

Both systems effectively overlay the Sync 3 interface to enable iOS and Android apps to be easily and safely used by drivers.

Fiat Chrysler has also announced it will support the two platforms, as car technology starts to become a major battle ground for tech firms and vehicle manufacturers.

CES 2016: HP Inc updates business laptop range with EliteBook Folio and EliteBook 1040 G3

HP Inc has announced two new enterprise-focused laptops at CES 2016, the EliteBook Folio and the EliteBook 1040 G3.

The EliteBook Folio is an ultra-thin and lightweight device, while the EliteBook 1040 G3 is a more conventional ultrabook with a greater range of ports. Like the rest of the EliteBook range, both laptops will come with HP Inc's specialised enterprise software, including HP TouchPoint Manager and HP Client Security.

They will run Windows 10 Pro with Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8.1 Pro available through downgrade rights.
