Top 10 small screen rivals to the iPhone SE: HTC One M9, Xperia Z5 Compact and OnePlus X
Phones with similar specs, features and prices to Apple's new iPhone
Let's get something out of the way: you can't get a 4in smartphone in 2016 that offers the same impressive performance and features as the iPhone SE.
Of course, if you're heavily invested in iOS the iPhone SE is the only real option and this Top 10 probably isn't worth your time. But if you're willing to look elsewhere and keep an open mind there are some sensible alternatives, each with their own merits.
We've rounded up some handsets that compete in price, specs or screen size. These don't appear in any sort of order, so don't assume we're ranking one phone over another.

10. Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Like the iPhone SE and the iPhone 6S before it, the Xperia Z5 Compact takes the internals of the original Z5 and squeezes them into a smaller frame.
The phone has a 4.5in screen and the Triluminous display just pips the iPhone SE in terms of resolution at 1,280x720 pixels (323ppi).
It comes with 32GB of storage as standard (which can be expanded up to 200GB via microSD), and there's a beefy 23MP front-facing camera and IP68 certification.
The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact can be picked up for around £340.

9. Oppo R7 Huawei is making big moves into the West, so we should turn our attention to another Chinese manufacturer, Oppo.
The Oppo R7 is a mid-tier phone through and through, but it offers a lot for £200. The 5in 1,920x1,080 AMOLED screen (with 445ppi) really shines, and the octa-core Snapdragon 615 moves things along at a decent pace.
The phone comes skinned with Color OS, which is based on Android (think Samsung's TouchWiz or Huawei's Emotion UI and you're almost there).
Like the iPhone SE, it's saddled with 16GB of storage but this can be expanded up to 128GB.
The battery is small at 2,320mAh, but it does offer fast charging.

8. Microsoft Lumia 650 The Lumia 650 is the only Windows Phone on our list and it's also the weakest in terms of specifications. So why include it? Well, buyers of the iPhone SE are likely to fall into one of two camps: those looking to make the upgrade from an old iPhone, and those just looking for a decent budget handset.
The Lumia 650 represents serious value at £155, which is less than half the cost of the iPhone SE.
The 5in 1,280x720 OLED display looks great, thanks in part to the ClearBlack technology that delivers deep, rich blacks.
There are a few drawbacks, however. The CPU is underpowered, which isn't helped by the paltry 1GB of RAM, but this is sufficient for the Windows 10 OS.

7. OnePlus X The OnePlus X follows on from the wildly popular OnePlus 2 that teased us with its exclusive invitation-only status last year.
The OnePlus 2 was a premium, top-tier handset, but the OnePlus X sets its sights a little lower and represents great value in the mid-range.
There's a Snapdragon 801 chipset running quad 2.3GHz cores and 3GB of RAM. The 5in AMOLED screen displaying Full HD 1,920x1,020 (441ppi) provides gorgeous colours and rich blacks, and the anodised metal and glass design looks the part too.
There's a perfectly respectable 2,525mAh battery which should last one to two days and, at under £200, it's nothing short of a bargain.

6. Yota YotaPhone 2 On the face of it nothing about this understated little Russian phone stands out.
There's a very attractive 5in AMOLED display with a full HD 1,920x1,020 resolution (442ppi), but flip the phone over and you'll discover a second screen in the form of a 4.7in e-ink display.
The YotaPhone is the first device of its kind to offer such a twist on the traditional smartphone formula. The e-ink display is fully touch-compliant and can be configured to display all kinds of widgets and handy info. It also functions as an e-reader, eliminating the need to carry a Kindle around with you.
It comes with 32GB of storage as standard and is priced at around £270.

5. BlackBerry Passport The BlackBerry Passport is the most leftfield entry in our list. It offers a perfectly square 4.5in IPS LCD display at 1,440x1,440 (453ppi) which looks great and makes for an interesting form-factor. But the Passport is certainly not for you if you're looking for a handset that matches a small screen with a small footprint.
It runs a Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.26GHz chipset with 3GB of RAM. There's a healthy 32GB of storage which can be pushed to 128GB via micro SD. It's also possible to install and run apps designed for Android via the new SNAP client.
We should also mention the incredible build quality, slick finish (especially in silver) and perhaps the finest keyboard ever on a BlackBerry device.
If that's tickled your fancy you can pick one up for £315 to £375.

4. Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) The Galaxy A3 straddles the middle ground between the mighty Galaxy S7 and Samsung's more budget-conscious models.
There's not a lot of difference between the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy J5, but we'd plump for the A3 if only for the smaller 4.7in screen (compared with 5in) and the same Super AMOLED display at 1,280x720 resolution. At 312ppi it's almost indistinguishable from the iPhone SE at 326ppi.
It also recalls the premium look and feel of the S6 despite the relatively affordable £230 price. Battery life is especially pleasing as the screen puts less of a strain on the 2,300mAh capacity.

3. Xiaomi Mi 4S Xiaomi devices are especially popular in India despite their Chinese heritage.
This is a pleasingly powerful phone. Interestingly it uses a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor with four cores running at 1.44GHz and two at 1.82GHz. This is backed with 3GB of RAM, and there's a 5in Full HD display with 1,920x1,020 pixels at 441ppi.
The phone comes with a sizeable 64GB of storage which, like a number of entries on our list, is further expandable up to 128GB. It'll put in the hours too thanks to the larger than average 3,260mAh battery.
If you can get your hands on one you can expect to pay £240.

2. Asus ZenFone 2 Laser Asus is best known for its formidable laptops, but the firm still knows a thing or two about smartphones.
The Asus ZenFone 2 Laser is clearly at the budget end of the market, as its average specs testify. The quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 5in 1,280x720 (294ppi) display and measly 8GB of storage as standard makes that abundantly clear (a 16GB model is also available).
But the ZenFone plays its trump card with the camera. The Laser in the title refers to the laser autofocusing built into the 13MP, f/2.0 front-facing snapper. You wouldn't normally expect autofocusing speeds of 0.3 seconds in a phone costing £190.

1. HTC One M9 If you don't fancy shelling out on the very latest from HTC, the One M9 (released in March 2015) is still worth your attention and money. The build quality is top notch, and it feels like a premium device through and through.
There's a 5in 1,920x1,080 full HD display (441ppi) and an octa-core Snapdragon 810 chipset with 3GB RAM. The 20MP camera should prove more than enough considering the 12MP of the iPhone SE.
The handset comes with 32GB of storage as standard, and the BoomSound speakers deliver an impressive soundstage. All at a very respectable £370.
