These fascinating videos will whet your appetite for Computing's IoT Business Summit 2016 in May
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that has generated as much scepticism as it has hype in recent years.
Computing's Internet of Things Business Summit, to be held on 12 May in central London, will cut through the buzzwords and explain exactly where and how businesses can benefit, and how to avoid the pitfalls.
But for now, have a look at our list of the top TED Talks on the topic, from a variety of technology luminaries.
Dr John Barrett is Head of Academic Studies at the Nimbus Centre for Embedded Systems Research at the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Group Director of the Centre's Smart Systems Integration Research Group. His research is focused on packaging, miniaturisation and embedding of smart systems in materials, objects and structures. He has been active in Irish and European R&D projects in the areas of packaging and systems integration for almost 30 years and has over 100 publications in topics related to his field.
2. What is the Internet of Things? And why should you care?

4. The Dawn of the IoT Experience Era
The "Internet of Everything" will be the biggest transition wave ever in the technology, says Chris White.
Chris is a passionate global change agent who believes in the power of diversity, teamwork, collaboration and the leverage of technology and partnerships to impact and improve the way we work, live, play and learn. An 18-year Cisco veteran he is currently Senior Vice President of Cisco's Internet of Everything (IOE) strategy and sales globally.
He argues that we are entering an era of hyper connectivity that will have a tremendous positive impact on our lives and the planet.
5. An Internet of (Im)Possible Things
Another video from Dr John Barrett, this time focusing on real world applications of the Internet of Things and how we can use these new technologies to improve our lives and society.
Drawing on a research background in embedded systems for harsh environment applications, Barrett began developing smart objects for the IoT, embedding electronics in wet concrete, sports equipment, the human body and other interesting use environments.
Through this he has become involved in communicating the potential and challenges of the IoT to a wide variety of audiences. He is particularly interested in how we can use the IoT to improve our lives and society rather than it just delivering even more tech gadgets for us to play with.
