Google Cardboard VR camera app moves to iOS

The worlds of Apple and Google parent company Alphabet continue their uneasy co-existence as Google's Cardboard virtual reality (VR) camera app becomes available for download on the iOS App Store.

The app allows users to create and share 360-degree VR images, and is marketed using the network effect. Recipients are prompted to open images using the app or to download it if they do not have it installed.

Google's Cardboard concept has long been a clever idea with cardboard attachments that turn users' smartphones into VR headsets. In this way, Google can spur the adoption of immersive environments and communication as social activities, without the expense of purchasing dedicated hardware.

Budget VR headsets are expected to be big sellers this year.

But that's not to say that Google sees VR as being only part of a low-cost social exchange, as all of these developments are stepping stones towards a richer immersive reality.

Google is expected to unveil details of the firm's Android Daydream VR platform next month.
