Sony brings PlayStation VR to UK for £349

Already selling out as demand for VR ramps up

Sony's PlayStation VR has gone on sale in the UK as virtual reality (VR) starts to become mainstream.

Just as promised, Sony's first VR headset is available to pick up from today at Amazon, Game and ShopTo for £349.

Amazon currently lists the PlayStation VR as sold out, but Game and ShopTo appear to have the face-worn device in stock and ready to ship.

Sony's VR headset is cheaper than most of its competitors', but it's worth noting that the headset does not include the PlayStation Move camera which is required to use the VR headset or any PlayStation Move controllers, both of which retail at approximately £40 each. Oh, yeah. You'll also need a PlayStation 4.

Previously known as Project Morpheus, the PlayStation VR headset supports Dualshock and Move input support, and Sony promised that more than 50 games will be available at launch, including London Heist, Dreams, Gran Turismo and EA's Star Wars Battlefront.

The PlayStation VR isn't just for gaming. It has a 'Cinematic mode' that plays 'flat screen' (non-VR) games and films, said Sony.

The headset has a 5.7in 1920x1080 OLED screen, or 960x1080 per eye, that supports refresh rates of 120Hz and 90Hz. It has an approximately 100-degree field of view, 360-degree tracking, and latency of less than 18ms, according to Sony. All in, the headset weighs around 610g.

In the box, there is a PlayStation VR headset, unsurprisingly, along with the processor unit, a connection cable for the headset, an HDMI cable, a USB cable, stereo headphones, an AC adapter and a power cord.

The launch of the Sony PlayStation VR comes just a day after Microsoft started selling its HoloLens augmented reality headset in the UK. µ
