Nokia 9: Specs and pricing - what to expect

Here's what you can expect from Nokia's next flagship

For years, Nokia was at the top of the mobile phone game. But as companies such as Samsung and Apple began to flourish, the firm eventually declined.

Microsoft bought Nokia, but it was unable to turn the company's fortunes around, and the American tech giant ended up flogging the firm.

Although Nokia was once worth hundreds of billions of dollars at peak, Microsoft sold parts of the firm for $350 million. The successful buyers were HMD, a Finnish firm formed by former Nokia employees, and Apple manufacturer Foxconn.

Both firms came to an agreement where HMD would own the brand name, while Foxconn would be in charge of building new Nokia phones.

Nokia's next steps

HMD launched the Nokia 8 this year, and it's expected to be succeeded by the Nokia 9 in early 2018. And the rumour mill has been going to be cray.

The Nokia 8, which boasts a Quad HD display and the Android operating system running out of the box, received lots of praise from tech pundits and consumers.

According to reports, HMD is believed to be preparing beefed up versions of the Nokia 5 and 9, along with a new flagship called the Nokia 9. They're expected to be announced on January 19th.

Top-of-the-line spec

Sources claim that the next device will build on the success of the 8, offering up a 5.5-inch QHD display. That would be slightly larger than the Nokia 8, which offers a 5.3-inch display.

However, it could feature a 18:9 display, too. Meanwhile, the 2018 versions of the Nokia 5 and 8 will have slimmer bezels than their predecessors. There's no word on how the Nokia 9 will differ in this respect.

Most high-end phones come with multiple memory options today, and the Nokia 9 won't be any different. Pundits believe that the handset will come in two options.

The first will sport 6GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, while the second option will come with the same amount of RAM but 128GB of storage. You can expect the latter to be more expensive as well. It'll be powered by an Snapdragon 835 processor.

HMD will kit out the Nokia 9 with a new camera set-up. As leaked images suggest, the phone will have a dual rear camera set-up, just like the current iPhones. There may even be a wide angle lens, too.

Other features

In terms of material, the Nokia 9 won't be that much different from other high-end handsets. It'll likely come with a glossy back that's either made of glass or metal.

As well as boasting the latest version of Android, many are expecting the nokia 9 to come with 1P6 certification. Along with the new Nokia 8, the 9 will drop the 3.5mm headphone jack. As for price, it's expected to start at $800.
