Technical glitch prevents several LastPass users from accessing accounts

Nothing to see here, LastPass claims on Twitter

A large number of users are reporting login issues with password management service LastPass.

Users have taken to social networking platforms, including Twitter and Reddit, to complain that they were unable to login to their accounts via LastPass for the past three days.

Users claimed that when they tried to access their account, they received an error message: "An error has occurred while contacting the LastPass server. Please try again later."

A user going by the name "Lolagal23" said on Reddit: "For two days now LastPass will not let me log in. The username and password are correct. The error message is 'An error has occurred while contacting the LastPass server. Please try again later'."

"I have tried multiple times on my Mac using Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Also tried iOS. I have tried using lastpass.com as well as the app and extension. I also tried Forgot Password."

User 'BenRussoUSA' commented on Downdetector: "Two days ago couldn't get one of my Windows Computers to login. Figured it would fix itself and waited. Still wasn't working a few hours later. Then my phone stopped working with it. Luckily I backed everything up on one of my remaining systems."

"My wife can login to her account on her computer. She logged out and I tried to login on her computer, but my account throws an error."

"It seems to be an account related problem, as she was able to log back in after that. The error is not a Master Password error, it says it had a problem talking to the LastPass Server and told me to try again later."

A large number of users also expressed their unhappiness over LastPass' support staff denying reports of any technical problem happening at all.

Notably, the company has still not updated their status page despite multiple users reporting the login issues. The support team has also failed to provide any explanation for the outage.

"The fact that LastPass is denying on twitter that there is any outage when multiple people are reporting auth server issues and are locked out with no support response means that I have to walk," said one user on Reddit.

"It would be helpful if someone would resolve the issue asap. I haven't seen any feedback from LP to anyone's post regarding this problem," 'Kenneth DeMarest' commented on Downdetector.

According to some users, the issue seems to affect only LastPass accounts created prior to 2014. A company spokesperson stated on DownDetector that they were aware of the issue and investigating the cause for it.

"At this time no service issues have been identified," the spokesperson said, suggesting that some software component might be causing the problems for some users.

This is, however, not the first time that LastPass has experienced technical or security-related issues.

In August last year, a security researcher discovered a bug in LastPass that would have enabled a malicious website to extract a previous password entered by the service's browser extension.

The bug was uncovered by Tavis Ormandy, a researcher at Google's Project Zero team, and was fixed in September 2019.

Earlier in 2011, LastPass asked its users to change their master passwords after discovering a possible breach to its database.

LastPass is a popular password manager used by a large number of people to store encrypted passwords online.

The service is offered free to users. The standard version comes with a web interface, but also includes plugins for various web browsers and apps for many smartphones.
