It's fair to say that requests by users to use their fancy new phones and tablets at work have not been met with universal delight by the IT department.

A much more common response is to sigh and hope that this new trend will disappear as quickly as it has emerged. Others are more proactive in their hostility, blocking access to the perimeter to all but company-provided devices.

While IT professionals who are looking beyond the security and compatibility worries associated with BYOD may still be in the minority, the potential benefits - including cost savings, increased flexibility and reduced levels of support - should not be ignored.

After all, the signs are that BYOD will not be a flash in the pan, but rather the start of a new way of organising IT, one that is a logical extension of other IP-enabled trends such as mobile and flexible working.
